A brief summary of proposed improvement works for your information and better understanding of works in progress.

Over the past 6 months we have carried out construction projects on the course that enhance the appearance in general and improve the drainage systems to fairways and greens.

18th Green

We have completed phase 2 regrading of the existing approach embankment ready for Matt and his team to carry out final landscaping/seeding works this week.

Matt will also include installation/positioning of the existing sprinkler system to accord with these regrading works.

1st Tee

Following completion of the 18th green and subject to weather conditions works will commence to improve the existing surface levels of the 1st tee.

Turf within the dipped trench area running through the centre will be lifted followed by infilling with new root zone soils to achieve a more acceptable level. Turf will then be re-laid.

New 3rd Winter Tee

Before we can bring this tee into play we have to cut down the existing large poplar tree. We are presently obtaining quotations from approved qualified tree surgeons as this tree has to be removed safely by climbing methods.

4th Tee

Releveling of this tee with seeding will be completed next week.

5th Fairway

Unfortunately resulting from the very adverse wet weather that we have been experiencing we are still unable to commence our intended 2nd phase drainage works.

These works will be completed at a later date.

Please note these drainage works together with the improvements carried out to the 18th green were phased/programmed to accord with golfing events schedule to take place during the summer period. We, Jamie, Matt, and I decided that minimum impact to events such as Captains weekends, Championship qualifiers, County championships and club competitions was the best way forward in ensuring that the golf course was in a presentable state throughout these matches.

On behalf of your committee I would extend our thanks to  Matt and his team in presenting and maintaining a very high standard golf course throughout considering the adverse unseasonable  weather conditions that they were experiencing at that time.

16th Tee

Earthworks to remodel the men’s and ladies tees have all been completed ready for Matt and his team to complete landscaping/seeding operations over the next 2 weeks. (subject to weather conditions)

9th Green

Works will commence tomorrow morning and will continue over the next 2 weeks to improve/extend the surrounding sides and back of the green to allow the grass mowing machinery to change direction off the immediate green surface area in doing so this should alleviate the problems that we are experiencing with bald areas of grass.

The works will, once completed improve the green surface rain water drainage.

Please note these works will not alter the existing green contours neither will they change the overall dimensions/size.

We will following valid advice by removing the conifer trees at the top back elevation by doing so this will greatly improve the natural sun light and air circulation to the green that is presently in shadow for the most part of the day.

We will introduce an acceptable drainage open cut off ditch to divert storm water away from the immediate area presently taken up by these trees that will drain into the existing drainage outlet at the top off the embankment.

General Civils Works

Paths will continue to be repaired as and when required throughout the course. We have today improved the path areas adjacent to the 11th and 12th Tees following concerns raised by members.

(Thanks Sarge)

Next Stage of proposed works

The 6th green and surrounding areas are of concern. We are aware of the requirement to introduce a new drainage catchment system to alleviate these storm water issues. You may not have noticed that following investigations with Jamie at the time we have already excavated out a catchment drain at the back of the winter 10th tee that will be extended with piped drainage to drain into the ponds.

We anticipate carrying out these works late January again subject to weather conditions.

We would welcome any constructive (cost neutral please) thoughts that you as our members may have in assisting me and Matt in improving/enhancing the general appearance of the course.

My email address is r.garn@btinternet.com should you wish to forward your direct comments to me. (Please constructive comments only)

I have already been handed a list from our Ladies Section that include comments/ideas that they believe will improve the general appearance and improve the golfing experience.

Many thanks ladies most helpful. We can incorporate your ideas regarding grassed areas and tees next spring.

A number of suggestions have also been received from our Senior Section that we have already incorporated in recent grass/undergrowth undertakings.

For ongoing general winter course maintenance operations please refer to Matt’s weekly update in the Club newsletter as this is his domain.

Thanks
