Open Medal Winners. Has Brynhill Achieved Something Unique in World Golf?
Stephen Dodd won The Senior Open. Kyron Sullivan won the Silver Medal as leading amateur. Both learned their golf at Brynhill. Could any other golf club claim the same?
There are moments in the history of a golf club that deserve to be recorded.
At Brynhill Golf Club, we believe we may have one of them.
In 2021, Brynhill's Stephen Dodd stood on the 18th green of Sunningdale's famous Old Course having birdied the final hole to become Senior Open Champion.
Five years later, another golfer with deep Brynhill roots, Kyron Sullivan, walked away from the 2026 ISPS HANDA Senior Open at Gleneagles as the leading amateur and Silver Medal winner.
Think about that for a moment.
The Senior Open Champion.
The Senior Open leading amateur.
Two Brynhill golfers.
For a members' golf club in Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, it is an extraordinary piece of golfing history.
And it raises a fascinating question:
Is Brynhill the Only Golf Club to Have Produced Both?
We have been researching whether another golf club in Great Britain & Ireland—or perhaps even further afield—can claim to have two golfers so closely associated with the same club who have achieved these two distinctions at The Senior Open.
So far, we haven't found one.
That doesn't allow us to definitively claim a world first. The Senior Open has a long history and golfers frequently have associations with several clubs during their careers.
But what we can say is this:
Having one golfer from your club become a senior major champion would be remarkable. Having another become the leading amateur at that same major championship is surely an exceptionally rare achievement.
And for Brynhill, there is an even better part to the story.
These aren't two famous golfers whose names were subsequently attached to the club.
Brynhill played a genuine part in their golfing journeys.
Stephen Dodd – Brynhill's Senior Major Champion
Stephen Dodd's career is one of the great stories of Welsh golf.
Before turning professional, Dodd won both the Welsh Amateur Championship and The Amateur Championship in 1989, and was part of the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team that defeated the United States at Peachtree Golf Club that year.
His professional career would eventually include three European Tour victories and one of Welsh golf's great international successes when Dodd partnered Bradley Dredge to win the 2005 World Cup of Golf for Wales.
But perhaps his greatest individual moment arrived at Sunningdale in July 2021.
The field for The Senior Open contained some of the biggest names in world golf.
Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
Darren Clarke.
Bernhard Langer.
Ernie Els.
And Stephen Dodd.
Dodd produced a sensational eight-under-par 62 in the third round, equalling the lowest round in the championship's history at the time and taking a two-shot lead into Sunday.
The final round became a battle.
Jiménez charged.
Clarke remained in contention.
And everything came down to the 72nd hole.
Dodd birdied it.
A final-round 68 gave him a four-round total of 267, 13 under par, one stroke ahead of Jiménez and two clear of Clarke.
Stephen Dodd was the 2021 Senior Open Champion.
A senior major champion.
And a golfer whose story will forever be connected with Brynhill Golf Club.
Five Years Later – Another Brynhill Golfer Arrives on the World Stage
Fast forward to July 2026.
This time The Senior Open was being played on the King's Course at Gleneagles in Scotland.
And remarkably, Brynhill had two Honorary Members in the championship field.
Stephen Dodd was there as a former champion.
Alongside him was Kyron Sullivan.
Sullivan had come through qualifying, securing his place in one of senior golf's five major championships.
Brynhill already knew Kyron's ability.
He had previously earned European Tour status and won on the Challenge Tour. He also holds the Brynhill course record and remains closely connected to the club.
But what happened at Gleneagles elevated his story to another level.
68 – What a Way to Announce Yourself
Sullivan opened his Senior Open with an outstanding two-under-par 68.
This wasn't a club competition or regional amateur event.
He was competing on the same leaderboard as some of the most recognisable golfers of the last generation.
Major champions.
Ryder Cup players.
Former world-class tour professionals.
And Kyron wasn't simply there to make up the numbers.
He made the cut and completed all four rounds of the championship.
His scores of 68, 75, 74 and 72 gave him a total of 289 (+9) and a share of 62nd position.
More importantly, he finished as the championship's leading amateur.
The reward was one of the most prestigious honours available to an amateur senior golfer:
The Senior Open Silver Medal.
Kyron himself subsequently described it as “one of my biggest achievements.”
Finishing Alongside a Ryder Cup Captain
There was another wonderful moment waiting for Kyron on Sunday.
His final round was played alongside Paul McGinley, the man who captained Europe to victory in the 2014 Ryder Cup.
For a golfer with Brynhill roots to walk the King's Course at Gleneagles on the final day of a senior major alongside a victorious Ryder Cup captain—and finish the week holding the Silver Medal—is some story.
But for Brynhill, it created an even bigger one.
Gold and Silver – Both Connected to Brynhill
Stephen Dodd – Senior Open Champion.
Kyron Sullivan – Senior Open Leading Amateur and Silver Medal Winner.
Different generations.
Different championships.
Different venues.
But the same golf club running through both stories.
Brynhill Golf Club.
For a club founded in Barry in 1921, that's something very special.
Perhaps the Course Has Something to Do With It
Those who know Brynhill will probably smile at this point.
Because Brynhill has never been an easy golf course.
It is a traditional parkland test where simply hitting the ball a long way isn't enough.
You have to shape shots.
Control your approaches.
Understand where to miss.
Deal with elevation.
Position the ball correctly from the tee.
And think.
It's one of the reasons we often say:
If you can learn to play Brynhill, you can play anywhere.
There may be something in that.
Because Dodd and Sullivan aren't isolated examples of good golfers emerging from the club.
Brynhill has an unusually strong record of developing talented players, with one former player Iestyn Taylor qualifying for an Open Championship and also Calvin O’Carroll, a British Boys Open Champion who went onto a career as a teaching professional in the prestigious La-Manga Golf Resort.
For a members' golf club of Brynhill's size, that's a remarkable production line.
More Than Medals – It's About Legacy
Perhaps the most important part of this story isn't actually the medals.
It's what they represent to the next generation.
When a Brynhill junior stands on the practice ground or first tee today, there is tangible evidence of where golf can take them.
A golfer from their club has become a senior major champion.
Another has become the leading amateur in that same major championship.
That's why, following Kyron's achievement, Brynhill renamed its Junior Club Championship the Kyron Sullivan Junior Club Championship.
It's not simply recognition of what Kyron achieved at Gleneagles.
It's about allowing his achievement to inspire whoever comes next.
Perhaps somewhere among today's Brynhill juniors is another future professional.
Another tour player.
Another major championship competitor.
Nobody knows.
But Stephen and Kyron have shown them that the journey can begin right here.
A Very Special Place in Brynhill History
Golf clubs rightly celebrate their club champions, their teams and the people who have contributed to their history.
Occasionally, though, something happens that extends far beyond the boundaries of the club itself.
We believe this is one of those occasions.

Two Brynhill golfers.
Two of the highest honours available at one of senior golf's major championships.
One small members' golf club in South Wales.
We haven't yet been able to identify another golf club in Great Britain & Ireland that can tell precisely the same story.
Maybe there is one.
Maybe somewhere in the world another club can match it.
We'd genuinely love to hear about it.
Until somebody tells us otherwise, however, we're going to allow ourselves to be extremely proud of this one.
Because from the fairways of Brynhill to the 18th green at Sunningdale and the King's Course at Gleneagles, this is a remarkable piece of Brynhill golfing history.
One club. One Senior Open Champion. One Senior Open Silver Medal winner.
Stephen Dodd. Kyron Sullivan. Brynhill Golf Club.
Not bad for a hidden jewel in the Vale of Glamorgan & Welsh Golf.
