Your Club. Your Voice. Your Future. Why Brynhill's Annual Members' Survey Matters

Every October, Brynhill Golf Club invites its members to have their say through our Annual Members' Survey. But this is much more than a questionnaire. It's an important part of how we listen, make decisions and shape the future of our Club.

At Brynhill Golf Club, we believe that a successful members' golf club should never be managed on assumptions alone.

We can have an experienced management team, a committed Executive Management Committee and a clear vision for the future, but there is one group of people whose opinions are absolutely essential.

Our members.

That's why every October we launch our Annual Members' Survey, giving members the opportunity to tell us what we're doing well, where we could improve and what they believe should be our priorities going forward.

It's an exercise we take seriously, because the future of Brynhill should be shaped by the people who belong to it.

Why Every Golf Club Should Listen to Its Members

Golf clubs are unusual organisations.

Members don't simply purchase a service. They develop a relationship with their club, often over many years or even generations.

They have opinions about the golf course, competitions, clubhouse, facilities, communication, membership value and the overall direction of the Club.

And those opinions matter.

However, not every member is comfortable raising concerns directly with management or speaking at a meeting.

Some have excellent ideas but never find the opportunity to share them.

Others may be perfectly happy with their membership experience but rarely have the chance to tell us what we're getting right.

An annual survey gives everyone an opportunity to contribute.

It also helps ensure that the loudest voices aren't necessarily the only voices being heard.

What Does the Brynhill Members' Survey Cover?

Our annual survey is designed to look at the wider membership experience, rather than concentrating on one particular area.

It gives members an opportunity to provide feedback on subjects such as:

  • Golf Course: Condition of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, presentation and ongoing improvements.

  • Clubhouse & Facilities: Changing rooms, showers, Sports Lounge, The Nest indoor golf simulator, THE BUNKER and general facilities.

  • Food & Hospitality: Catering, bar service, value, atmosphere and the overall clubhouse experience.

  • Golf & Competitions: Competition formats, fixtures, accessibility, tee-time availability and the golfing experience.

  • Communication & Management: How well members are informed, how approachable management is and whether members feel their views are considered.

  • Future Investment: Which improvements members believe should take priority.

  • Overall Membership Satisfaction: Whether Brynhill is meeting expectations and providing good value for membership.

By looking at the Club as a whole, we gain a far better understanding of the complete membership experience.

Using GolfClubSurveys.com to Understand Our Members Better

At Brynhill, we use GolfClubSurveys.com to conduct our Annual Members' Survey.

Rather than relying on a basic online questionnaire, GolfClubSurveys.com is a dedicated survey platform designed specifically for golf clubs, helping us collect, organise and analyse feedback across the different areas of club life.

The platform provides a structured way for members to share their opinions, while giving our management team valuable information about overall satisfaction, areas requiring improvement and the issues that matter most to our membership.

One of its particularly useful features is the ability to generate AI-assisted reports, helping turn survey responses into clear findings, identify recurring themes and highlight potential priorities for the Club.

This is important because collecting feedback is only the beginning.

The real value comes from understanding what members are telling us and using that information to make better decisions.

For Brynhill's General Manager and four-person Executive Management Committee, the survey provides another valuable source of evidence when considering future investment, operational improvements and the overall direction of the Club.

It also allows us to compare findings from year to year, helping us understand whether changes are improving the membership experience.

By using a specialist golf club survey platform, we're aiming to make our annual feedback process more consistent, informative and useful for everyone involved.

Our members provide the feedback. GolfClubSurveys.com helps us analyse it. Brynhill's leadership team is responsible for acting on what we learn.

That is how we believe a modern members' golf club should approach feedback.

Why the Survey Is So Important to the Leadership Team

Running a golf club involves making decisions that affect hundreds of people.

Some decisions are straightforward. Others involve significant investment, competing priorities and difficult financial choices.

At Brynhill, General Manager Scott Warne works alongside a four-person Executive Management Committee, supported by the Club's experienced management and operational teams.

Our responsibility is to make decisions in the best interests of Brynhill and its members.

But to do that effectively, we need reliable feedback rather than relying entirely on individual conversations or personal opinions.

The Annual Members' Survey helps us identify patterns.

If a handful of members raise an issue, we listen.

If a significant proportion of the membership identifies the same issue through the survey, that tells us something important.

Equally, if members consistently express satisfaction with a particular area, we know that is something worth protecting.

The survey helps us distinguish between isolated concerns and wider membership priorities.

From Feedback to Investment Decisions

One of the biggest challenges facing any golf club is deciding where to invest.

There will always be more potential projects than there is money immediately available to complete them.

At Brynhill, we have made considerable improvements in recent years, including investment in the clubhouse, Sports Lounge, indoor golf facilities and other areas of the Club.

But we also recognise that there is still work to do.

Our ageing irrigation system, tee reconstruction, men's changing and shower facilities, and planned clubhouse frontage improvements are examples of projects that form part of our longer-term thinking.

These are significant decisions, and understanding members' priorities is extremely valuable.

The survey doesn't replace the responsibility of management to make informed decisions, but it provides another important piece of evidence when deciding what should come next.

Of course, not every suggestion can be implemented, and some projects will always be dictated by safety, infrastructure, financial circumstances or operational necessity.

But members should know that their feedback is helping inform those conversations.

Measuring Progress Year After Year

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of running a survey every October is the opportunity to measure progress.

A single survey tells us how members feel at one particular moment.

An annual survey allows us to begin identifying trends.

Are members becoming more satisfied with the golf course?

Has investment in the clubhouse improved the membership experience?

Are our communication systems working?

Are we addressing concerns that were raised in previous years?

And are new issues emerging that we haven't yet recognised?

By asking consistent questions over time, we can begin to assess whether the decisions we make are having the intended effect.

Good golf club management isn't simply about making improvements. It's about understanding whether those improvements are actually making a difference to members.

Transparency Should Be Part of Club Culture

At Brynhill, communication and transparency are central to how we want the Club to operate.

Our members have access to a range of communication channels, including:

MembersHub — providing club notices, updates, important information and access to useful resources directly from a mobile phone.

Our Official WhatsApp Club Channel — helping members stay informed with timely announcements and updates.

Weekly Ask The GM — an opportunity for members to ask questions, raise concerns, make suggestions and receive responses on matters affecting the Club.

Executive Management Committee Minutes — available through the secure members-only area of our website.

And, of course, our Annual Members' Survey every October.

Each serves a different purpose, but together they help create a club where communication is regular, accessible and genuinely two-way.

We don't believe members should have to wait until an AGM to find out what's happening at their golf club.

Nor should they feel that their only opportunity to express an opinion is when something goes wrong.

Why Honest Feedback Is Better Than Positive Feedback

Naturally, it's encouraging when members tell us they're happy with the Club.

But constructive criticism can be just as valuable.

If something isn't working, we need to know.

If members believe we should be doing something differently, we want to understand why.

And if there is an area where expectations aren't being met, it is better for us to identify that issue than allow frustration to build.

A successful members' survey isn't one where everyone says everything is perfect. It's one where members feel comfortable giving genuine, considered feedback.

That doesn't mean management will always agree with every suggestion.

But it does mean we can listen, explain our decisions and be accountable for the direction we're taking.

Why October Is an Important Time to Ask

Holding the survey every October gives us a valuable opportunity to reflect on the main golfing season.

Members have experienced the course through spring, summer and early autumn.

They've participated in competitions, used the clubhouse, experienced our facilities and seen the improvements that have taken place.

Their feedback arrives at a useful point in the year, helping inform discussions about future budgets, winter projects and priorities for the season ahead.

It also gives us time to consider the findings before the following year's AGM.

That makes the survey a practical management tool, rather than simply an annual exercise.

A Growing Club Must Never Stop Listening

Brynhill has experienced significant membership growth in recent years, reaching our cap of 500 Full Playing Members and introducing a membership waiting list for the first time in more than 30 years.

That is an achievement we're incredibly proud of.

But success brings responsibility.

As a club grows, it becomes even more important to ensure members continue to feel valued, informed and involved.

We don't want growth to come at the expense of the personal connection that makes Brynhill special.

And we certainly don't want to assume that because membership demand is strong, everything must be perfect.

A waiting list tells us that people want to join Brynhill. Our Annual Members' Survey helps us understand how those already here feel about belonging to it.

Both are important measures of the Club's health.

Your Club. Your Voice. Your Future.

Ultimately, the Brynhill Annual Members' Survey is about something very simple.

Listening.

We want members to be proud of their golf club, to enjoy the experience of belonging to Brynhill and to feel confident that the Club is being managed responsibly.

We also want them to know that their opinions matter.

Not every improvement can happen immediately.

Not every suggestion will be practical.

And not every decision will please everyone.

But by listening carefully, communicating openly and making decisions based on evidence, we believe Brynhill can continue moving in the right direction.

Every October, we ask our members to help us shape the future of their Club.

Because Brynhill isn't simply somewhere people play golf.

It's their golf club. And their voice deserves to be heard.
