WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AS A NEW MEMBER & NEW GOLFER
HEALTH & SAFETY
Car Park
Please be careful in the car park of golfers and visitors who should be treated as pedestrians and maybe situated at their vehicles preparing golf equipment ready to play or perhaps putting golf equipment away and changing shoes etc. If you are walking in the car park please keep a look out for vehicles reversing, especially any electric vehicles which can be very quiet.
Golf Course
When playing golf please be mindful of cross-over holes and other golfers. When a golfer shouts "fore," it is a warning to others on the course that a golf ball is heading in their direction. If you hear someone shout "fore," you should stop moving, crouch low and protect your head with your hands. Golfers should always be aware of their surroundings and shout "fore" if they think their ball may be headed towards other players or visitors on the course. Please also be cautious of your footing while coming down or going up banks and uneven ground especially in dewy or wet conditions.
Course Maintenance
Regular maintenance of the golf course by our Green-Staff is happening throughout the day so please consider their safety when hitting shots and also please be mindful of machinery operating on the golf course and surrounding areas.
Weather Conditions
Weather can pose a significant risk to golfers, particularly lightning, and extreme heat or cold. Please make sure you are prepared for a round of golf with suitable clothing, footwear and snacks and drinks for rehydration as well as sun block which is handy to keep in your bag. A hat is also advisable on a sunny or warm day.
Golf Cart Safety
Golf carts are well maintained and checked regularly for safety however it is your responsibility to check over a golf cart before use. Riders are instructed to keep all body parts inside the cart while it's moving, and to follow any additional safety rules the course has in place. No juniors under 18 are able to book or drive a buggy unless they have a valid driving licence.
First Aid & Defibrillators
Every golf course should have a first aid kit available in case of injuries or emergencies. The staff should be trained in first aid procedures and know how to contact emergency services if necessary.
Hazardous Chemicals
Golf courses often use pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals to maintain the course. Please be mindful of this when playing. Do not ever lick a golf ball to clean it and please wash your hands thoroughly after play or before handling food.
HISTORY OF BRYNHILL
Brynhill as it exists today began its life at Barry YMCA on Wednesday 9th February 1921. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mr R.Fletcher to explore the possibilities of acquiring land for the purpose of forming a Golf club in Barry.
We have a full page on our history on the link below.

CLUB FACILITIES & AMENITES
Our golf club boasts a full 18-hole course that measures 6,368 yards from the back tees. You can take a tour of the course HERE
Our club is proud to have 2 full-time PGA Golf Professionals. These are Director Of Golf and PGA Pro Leon Warne and PGA Pro Jordan Taylor, both are readily available to provide equipment advice and golf lessons/coaching. You can find Leon or Jordan in the shop, located in the car park, with his signage on the wall. In the shop, you can rent a golf buggy (if over 18) at a discounted rate of £12 per round if you prefer not to walk the course or want to play 18 holes in a shorter period. Leon or Jordan will be happy to demonstrate how to operate and return the buggy, as well as show you how to recharge it for the next person.
We have a small short game practice area at the top of the club, accessible by walking through the car park's top gate and turning left. You will find some covered golf bays and a practice green where you can improve your chipping and bunker play.
Our practice putting green, which has 9 holes, can be found near the 1st tee. It is perfect for honing your putting skills for long and short putts.
The Men's and Ladies' locker rooms are located in their respective sections inside the main clubhouse. The main doors of the locker room have a security lock which can only be accessed by a security fob which will be included with your bag tag and bar card to collect.
Inside the clubhouse, we have a fully-stocked licensed bar that serves hot drinks, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages during the operating hours.
Our main lounge around the bar area is perfect for hosting events such as weddings, parties, and wakes, free of any room charge/hire as a member. The Brynhill Games Room has 2 Winmau professional dartboards with Winmau surrounds, Winmau throwing mats and high grade LED lighting. We also have a 7ft Signature Tournament Pro Edition Pool Table. It is a stunning commercial table, played by professionals of the highest standards using Aramith balls. The room also its very own 75” Samsung smart TV showing Sky Sports.
The opening hours for the Games room will be posted on the club WhatsApp group every Monday morning as the operating hours may be impacted by clubhouse events. Only full playing members and house members will be permitted to use the games room and must be over 18 years of age.
We also have a sports bar that features a high-quality, pull-down TV screen showing the latest Six Nations, Golf Championships, Football fixtures, and other major sporting events from SKY. You are welcome to walk in anytime, and even if you are alone, it's easy to mingle and make new acquaintances with other members.
Within the clubhouse we also have a small restaurant area where we serve Sunday lunch and other meals. You can talk to anyone behind the bar who will assist you with booking a Sunday lunch or available food requirements.
COURSE LAYOUT & ETIQUETTE
As mentioned earlier a Golf course overview or tour can be found HERE
When teeing off the 1st this immediately crosses the 18th fairway where golfers may be hitting their approach shots to the 18th green so please be “Golfer Aware” and give priority to anyone who is playing the 18th hole.
There are many many complicated rules in golf but do not worry about knowing them all if you are new to golf. Learning the rules does take time but there are some “must know” rules which will help you when on the course.
Tee shots: The first shot of each hole must be taken from behind the tee markers.
Order of play: The player farthest from the hole plays first, and play continues in that order until all players have completed the hole.
Out of bounds: If your ball goes out of bounds (beyond any white marker stakes), you must take a penalty stroke and replay the shot from where you last played.
Water hazards: If your ball lands in a water hazard, you have the option to play the ball from where it entered the hazard with a penalty stroke, or take a drop outside of the hazard with a penalty stroke.
Lost balls: If you cannot find your ball within 3 minutes, it is considered lost and you must take a penalty stroke and replay the shot from where you last played.
Putting: Once on the green, you may mark your ball and lift it to clean it or get it out of the way of another player's putt. When on the green be mindful of where your playing partners are on the green and do not walk on their line which is the line between their ball and the hole.
Etiquette: Golf is a game of etiquette, and players should always show respect for their fellow players and the course. This includes repairing divots, raking bunkers, and not causing damage to the course. Please refrain from taking a golf buggy or golf trolley over any tees or greens - if you do have a golf buggy or trolley please always go around the greens and tees staying clear of the fringes and aprons of the greens areas.
As a beginner in golf, it's common to take longer to play a hole. Don't worry, this is normal and everyone starts from the same place. However, if you notice a group behind you waiting, it's best to step aside to a safe area and let them play through. This will relieve any added pressure and allow you to continue with your round without any interruption.
Remember to familiarise yourself with the rules of the course you're playing on, as well as any rules specific to tournaments or competitions you may be participating in. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask other golfers for help. You can also ask for assistance on the "GOLF MATES" WhatsApp group, which you should now have access to.

GOLF COMPETITIONS AT BRYNHILL
Brynhill Golf Club's Mens and Ladies Sections host weekly competitions during the Summer Golf Season. To participate in these competitions, it is mandatory to possess an official club handicap, which can be obtained by submitting four scorecards from four different general play rounds. You can submit the scorecards on the club recording digital system and either I can show you this in our 1-1 meeting or Jordan in the shop will assist you. This will also be the same system that is used for entering competition scores.
After acquiring an official club handicap, one can enrol in club competitions by reserving a favourable tee time on the How Did I Do booking app. Players can join with their friends or seek out a tee time for one or two individuals and add their name to the list. The competitions are diverse throughout the year, with some taking place on Saturdays, some on Sundays, and some on both days. For Ladies, competitions are usually held on Tuesdays and weekends. The competition format also varies, with some being individual and others being team-based. The Members Section of the website has a Fixture List that outlines the competition dates and formats.

CLUB CULTURE & DRESS CODE
On the odd occasion Brynhill GC has humorously been referred to as a “Pub with a Golf Course attached” meaning that our social side is one to be envied! However we now pride ourselves equally on having one of the most challenging Golf courses in South Wales. It is often said that if you can learn to play golf at Brynhill you will be able to play anywhere and over the years our various individual members successes and team successes have proved that saying correct.
As a club we are moving with the times and over the years we have far less formal dress codes for both the club and the course. Generally all we ask of members is that on the Golf course you refrain from wearing jeans or denim of any kind, this also extends to round next t-shirts with no collar, tracksuits and football / rugby jerseys. Generally we like you to wear golf clothing which lends itself to making easier and less restricted golf swings. Also suitable footwear (preferably golf shoes with soft spikes) so you don’t slip or fall on the golf course. Leon or Jordan in the pro-shop will be able to advise on this and they also are stockists of footwear and clothing..
With regards to the clubhouse smart jeans and clean trainers are now allowed and the general rule is just to be presentable, smart and casual.
MEMBER SERVICES
At times, your golf gear may malfunction or the grips may become worn out. Fortunately, Director of Golf Leon Warne at the pro-shop is well-equipped to offer various services such as repairing clubs and re-gripping. Opting for a club re-gripping can be immensely advantageous, particularly if Jordan tailors the grips to fit your hand size. Additionally, Leon extends a range of other services to members including lessons and coaching. If you have any queries or would like your clubs inspected for grips or general fitting.
Regarding golf lessons and coaching Leon will tell you that the “fastest” way to improve your game, is to take golf lessons. Even the best golfers in the world have private instructors that help them with their game!
Golf lessons teach you how to:
✅ Stay motivated
✅ Play and learn the game
✅ Invest in yourself
✅ Fix faults in your swing
✅ Have fun on the course
Do drop in to see Leon or Jordan, who will be happy to assist you or alternatively you can contact them directly by going to the link here
